Recognizing a Possible Overdose Emergency
Signs of a suspected opioid overdose can include extreme sleepiness or inability to wake, slow or stopped breathing, unusual snoring or gurgling sounds, and changes in skin, lips, or fingernail color.
If you suspect an overdose, call 911 immediately. Follow the emergency dispatcher’s instructions. If naloxone is available and you are trained or able to administer it according to its directions, use it. Because naloxone’s effects may be temporary, emergency medical care is still essential.
CPR skills may also become important if a person is not breathing normally or has no signs of circulation. Following current CPR guidance and instructions from emergency dispatchers can help provide critical support until emergency medical professionals arrive.
